s70 et al., rattling dashboard class action

Post by wheeler000 »

I have decided to try to make volvo do what they should have volunteered to do and pay to fix all of our rattling dashboards. And before you start to wonder and mumble under your breath; no I am NOT the type of person to go around suing people. I have contacted a class action attorney in San Francisco, California who feels that this may be a case that they want to take on. If you would like you can contact him. His name is Jason Gibbs and his phone number is 415-981-4800. I told him that I thought that no one should get any money but that they should treat it as if Volvo was forced to do a recall and pay to fix or replace everyone's broken dashboards. This post is just kind of an informational thing just in case you feel the same way I do. I am not trying to start any fights or cause any sort of confrontation between people. I am convinced that this is a safety issue.

Glad to hear it! I have never had a problem with my ETM but from what I understand they are both inevitabilities.

Good luck. I'm sure the dashboard issue pisses you off, obviously, but you're wasting time you'll never get back.

Thanks. I don't plan on making this any more complicated or life consuming than seems sensible. I hope all of those who make time for this site and who spend their money and their weekends tending to this issue wil carve out a couple of minutes to make a phone call. It does not have to be to this lawyer, it could be to Volvo or to the National Highway Safety folks. I don't think people mind complaining about this problem I just think that they're complaining in the wrong places. Maybe all of those saved Saturday afternoons with the family can make up for whatever time I spend on this.

NHS won't do anything unless it represents a safety issue, and Volvo's not going to do anything for a car that's over 13 years old at this point. Rattles and squeaks happen in a lot newer cars than this. Just part of the aging process.

Our 1st run S70 does had a noisy dash. My daughter drives it so she's the one that complains. It has much more serious issues than the dash noise so I have not done anything about it yet. If you get some kind of quick connection number or something for me/us to connect with I'll take the time to contact them. Just don't want to call and get the run around for 30 minutes trying to give my 2 cents.

Just wondering, what would be the safety issue other than one blowing a fuse and freeking out while driving? LOL

Now Jaguar has a serious safety issue that should be a case. Their AUTO ADJUSTING HEAD LIGHT fail to raise after about 7 years and cause the head lights to only shine 8 feet down the road when on. It's a $2,400 repair at the dealer. Not sure why no one has stepped up to that one yet.

Volvo did have a serious issue with wire harness plastic coming off in the cars built in the 80's. This was causing car fires and even caused homes to burn to the ground. Since the cars were over 10 years old they did NOT qualify for a recall, so I was told. There is a '86 740 GLE sitting within 40 feet of my 850 right now that has bare wires under the hood. Just touch a wire and watch the rubber/plastic coating fall off.

Anyway, good luck with that. I get those class action notifications for products I own/have owned sometimes with checks or credits for a few bucks now and again. I usually just toss them. Not much time chasing a few dollars. Volvo has changed hands a few times and would likely close their doors before they spent $3,000 per S/V70 on that repair.

They usually rattle AFTER someone took it apart to install a new AC evaporator.
and then It's quite easy to break a flimsy dash clip on re installation

My safety concern stems from an uncertainty surrounding the behavior of the passenger side air bag in the event an accident when that air bag is mounted to a dashboard which is no longer properly mounted to the car. As far as the question of getting the runaround; I did not experience it at all with anyone I have talk to.
Volvo: 1-800-458-1552. I talked to Chris at extension 1937. Be nice, he is a nice guy.
The government also was very minimal on the run around. Their phone number is easily found on their website.

If your AC evaporator is recent and you're AC is cold, there is a (messy) way to quiet the noise.
Buy some spray foam in a can.
Find an access hole and spray it in there.
It WILL quiet the offending corner.
If it rattling in the middle this won't work but it WIll work in the corners of the dash
