i took it to a dealer yesterday, they put it on a lift in front of me and the rear wheels didnt turn when in drive so as i suspected the awd isnt working, the tech explained to me that the sleeve is shot and said to replace the angle gear as well, i just dont get why the gear would need to be replaced as well. especially to the tune of $1600-2000. Anyone done this job themselves?

Common problem on XC90 AWDs built before July 2006, when Volvo upgraded the spline sleeve to the rear angle gear. Especially common where's there's a lot of snow/slush, and therefore a lot of corrosion. Unfortunately, my 2006 was built in Sep 2005, but it spent it's first three years in sunny Southern California as a dealership lease. I've owned it for 3 years now, and my AWD is still working great. We just had 2 foot of snow in the Colorado foothills, and I took it out on some back roads, that were fairly steep, and had some fun. It did great. So far, so good on my AWD. But I keep my underbody as clean as possible in the winter.
