Non-Turbo Engine Probs: Bad Coil Pack or MAF sensor?

Post by andrewwbryan12 »

Hey guys,

I've had my 2001 S60 non-turbo for about 3 years now, and I have just been plauged with problems. Now I'm facing some engine issues. When my engine is warm, and I'm stopped at a light, the engine randomly jerks (Feels like a random misfire). This happens 1-4 times and the RPMs bounce down about 50 revs each occasion, you can feel/hear the engine shake when this happens too. This also happens in drive and reverse, but only around low RPMs (driving slow without using the accelerator pedal). When in neutral, my RPMs behave in away similar to a failing ETM. Sometimes when in park the car will rev and idle near 1500 RPM. However, I higher RPMs my car behaves just fine.

There have not been any lights on my dash signifying an issue. I replaced my plugs yesterday, and reset the computer. Is there anything I can try to rule out the MAF or a Coil pack as the problem? I heard something about unpluging coil packs 1 at a time while the engine is running? What about MAF sensor spray?

I won't have time to drive to the dealer and check for stored codes until Friday :(

EDIT: I am also using 91 Octane, and it is not bad gas.

Did some more research on this issue:

The coil packs can be unplugged while the engine is running. Unplug one at a time and see if it makes a difference. Once you've found one you can unplug without seeing a drop in engine performance, swap the coil with working one and verify the bad coil has moved to another cylinder.

As for the MAF sensor, this can also be unplugged while the engine is running. If the idle is rough to begin with and the MAF is unplugged, the ECM will switch to it's 'Backup Plan'. If you have a faulty MAF and you unplug it, you should notice the engine will start to run much smoother. If this is the case, you can try cleaning your MAF with MAF spray. MAF sensors have been known to heat up and collect a dirt residue.

I will be trying both of these methods later. If neither prevails, I will clean the throttle body.

and reset the computer...
Did you read/clear any fault codes; also have you had the ETM and TCM firmware updated?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
