2001 V70 2.4T TRANSMISSION ISSUES

I just bought an 01 V70 2.4T with the 5spd auto tranny. It has 119k miles. When cold, car drives fine, as it does on the highway (same gear). The problems start when fully heated up (driven awhile) around town. Coming to a stop there are sporatic harsh downshifts, sporatic clunky upshifts, and sometimes a long pause in the transmission with a slam into gear when rounding a corner that does not require a full stop but just slowing and getting back on the gas. I have researched the net and see there are software upgrades available and some other forums point to sensors that maybe broken. (I have no dash lights or messages indicating problems). I fear I may require a rebuild and although 119K is not low mileage, I would think Volvo trannies would reach much further with proper maintenance. If evidence points to a costly rebuild, I would further appreciate any advice on oil coolers or suggestions on how to prolong a v70 tranny. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated!! Thanks!! Ben

Stop-neutral shifting was a mistake by Volvo and they do a software upgrade to get rid of it. Obviously yours hasn't had the upgrade, so take your car to the dealer and have this done. At the same time, get them to check your transmission fluid and flush it if they will. If not, then get a good indy to flush it or do it yourself. You will either need the Volvo ATF (expensive) or Mobil-3309 special ATF (same thing as the Volvo stuff but much cheaper).
