Parking Brake Cable Problem 2004 V70 (e brake)

I started doing a brake job on my 2004 V70 T5 following the excellent thread posted here.

One side done and finished but ran into a problem on the other side.

The rotor was stuck on the parking brake shoe and when I finally got it off one of the Parking Brake Strut Spring got pulled out and bent.

I bent it back into shape but had problems fitting it back. I tried to see how the other one was installed and removed the parking brake shoes. How ever when I tried to fit the shoes back the "tensioning piece" fell off.

hooked tensioner into cable and the folded the tensioner closed so it fits inside the tensioner

Now I can`t reattach it to the cable. I backed off the adjustment screw at the hand brake handle to get maximum slack but I can`t figure out how to reattach it. I don`t know if I am missing a piece some where or not.

Thanks for any help. Need this car back on the road by monday (our only car)

After searching a few hours more and going through countless fuzzy diagrams I think I found my problem. I need a new expander. So I'll refit the brakes, get the expander and then strip it again to install it.

Update.

I went and got a new expander at the dealership.
When I looked how the two parts hooked together they just split apart so I took the old one and joined it back together, lubed it a bit and reinstalled it on the car. I`ll keep the new one since there is a 20% restocking fee.

So e brake works again and brakepads and rotors have been successfully changed.

I know you've already finished your brake project. I'm sharing my experience as FYI.
When I opened up the rear brakes on my 2001, I found the parking brake lining have separated from the brake shoe a long ago. There was corrosion and the reaction stud have sheared. I have no idea when this happened as parking brake was never used. Browsing through other Volvo forums, rear parking brake is wide spread issue and have caused the following:

* poor fuel economy
* locked up rear wheels
* failed yearly vehicle inspection
* scraping noise at random

I've since removed all parking brake mechanism on each side, for better or for worse.

I JUST had this problem, retainer was broken off
What we did was tap and screw the clip back (using a very small screw) to the backing plate this is usually spot welded
Works just fine

When doing E brakes you should always buy new clips and springs. Cheap enough to buy, you don't want to re use these old, rusty springs
