When I purchased the car there was a vibration that was diagnosed as a weight missing on the drive shaft from the bevel box. The whole drive shaft was replaced but I do not believe correctly because there is still vibration. The tires have been balanced and in good condition but the vibration occurs at about 40mph - peaking at 45mph - a little better from 50 to 60 but bad again at 65 mph. I have tried attaching weights to the end by the bevel box with no success. Driving in 3rd gear does not change the speed at which the vibration occurs. Can anybody help me figure out what the problem is? I have heard that driving with the drive shaft disconnected can help me determine where the problem is but I do not know how to disconnect it. Are there detailed instructions for this procedure anywhere? Should I be looking elsewhere?
Thank you,
Kelvin
2000 V70 XC Driving Vibration
i recentlypurchased an 01 xc70 and the horn, which i never tested during the test drive b4 purchase
, was going out... took it to Volvo and they repaired but told me 2 of my engine mounting bolts were "worn down" but since my warranty will only replace if they are "broken" I have to wait until they actually are in "a broken state"... when I asked the Volvo master mechanic how I would know when that occurs, he said I would feel some vibration that would worsen over time... and because they are currently "worn down" they are still functioning, minimally for the time being.

If you want them repaired, jack the car up and put a crow bar under them and "tear" them, that way you can get them repaired. I know this sounds bad but if they are worn it's just a matter of time before they are broken and you probably already have a vibration. The ones that break first (I suspect are the same ones mentioned) are the: 1. under the timing belt and 2 under the air filter box- to the transmission.
Good luck and I hope they get replaced under warranty.

Taking out the drive shaft did not look like a job I could do in my driveway. I tool it to the shop (audi, bmw volvo etc) and the said that it would damage the car if it was driven with the drive shaft removed (as a fwd). I thought this could be done to help determine the cause of my vibration problem

We had the same problem when we bought our XC70 with 123k miles on it in August. After doing the wheel bearings, alignment, etc but the problem persisted, we replaced the control arm bushings and front CV shafts. Voila! Annoying shaking problem solved!
