oil light on 1996 850 turbo
oil light on 1996 850 turbo
a few monthes ago i was waiting in the drive thru line for coffee and my oil presure light came on. it didnt tick or anything so i kept on going till i got home. about 20 minutes after. the next day it was out. since then it will often but not always stay on in the morning when i start it but if it shut it down and restart it right away it will be out. yesterday it came on and stayed on . drove it home from work and then to work thismorning in traffic and all. it made no unusual noise but it did go out a few times when i was slowing down or coming to a stop. are the sensors a problem on these? if it is a presure problem is it just a case of removing the oil pan and changing some o rings or will i need to replace parts. i have a lift tools and a pretty big o ring kit in both metric and standard.

Oil pressure switch is a possible problem but rare, while for sure the oil sump pickup tube o-rings is a common failure in the 850. Do them all if you drop the pan, including the turbo return line seal. There is a kit from Volvo or maybe you've got the sizes. But make sure you use quality, you don't want to be going back in there. I use the Volvo brand pink goop to re-seal the pan.

I would assume that you have already made sure the oil is topped up?
Have you checked the sensor connection on the front of the engine? Sometimes and oil leak can render the area quite greasy and this can cause the light to trigger.
The only way to truly eliminate the oil pressure sender as being the culprit would be to remove it and connect an actual pressure gauge to see what the oil pressure is like.

Or swap in a sender switch that you know works (borrow one).midniteliquid wrote:The only way to truly eliminate the oil pressure sender as being the culprit would be to remove it and connect an actual pressure gauge to see what the oil pressure is like.

Regardless of car you own, whenever you see oil light:
1. Check oil level first!
2. Verify that oil pressure switch works.
3. Then for cars with more than 14-15yr....chances the O-ring in the Oil pan is crumbling...
Oil pressure in this case is only a problem when idling, at rpm > 1200 rpm, the oil light should go out.
We see similar issues in BMW E39 (1997-2003) models as well.
Talking about aging...

yes i got it fixed, put it on the lift 3 hours ago, took off the pan and changed the o rings that looked just fine. put in new oil but had to reuse the filter because when i when to get it off the shelf it was not restocked. started it up,,,, same thing. found a common chrysler jeep filter that was the same as far as gasket size and threads so i put it on and it fixed the problem. the filter had less than 4000kn on it. i took a look and you can see were it is falling apart inside. if i had the filter in stock i would of just changed the oil firs but hey.. it was a learning experiance and next time i will have that pan off in 2 hours i i get one in at the gareage.

Or maybe next time you get one in, you should change the filter first!

This is why it is important to:
1. Use only Volvo, Mann, Mahle and Bosch oil filters. Nothing else.
2. Even if you believe in prolonged oil interval (such as 10K-15K, which I don't recommend), at least change the Oil Filter every 5K-7K. The Oil Filter only lasts that long.
