Re: my transition to the dark side is complete
I agree, I like Mercedes, my grandfather refused to drive anything but a Mercedes, but with a rare exception the BMW is a sexier faster longer lasting car and I don't need to tell you guys what is special about a Volvo. the only thing that would make me by Mercedes at this point in time is if I got a friend named Lorenzo...just so if someone called me on my cellphone while I was driving and said what are you doing? I could say me and Lorenzo rolling in the Benzo.

The new CLA looks fantastic. And the 208 HP turbo-4 sounds promising. I'm going to take a serious look at it with my girlfriend when it comes out. It's certainly got to be more exciting than the Camry =D

Mercedes has the bad habit of every now and then introducing a so called affordable car to the market. you could get a mid ninety's M and totally restore it for the same money and have a remarkable machine rather than a list of compromises. if you have to go new try a Scion fr-s, that thing is sick.

That would be a "me" car...I've driven one and loved it.

Well, first I have to confess that I'm a bit of an old fart and nothing designed since the mid 80s really does much for me. But, what I'm really trying to say is that a Volvo is not a car you buy for its styling. You buy it because its solid, functional, understated and, if its a turbo, a lot faster than it looks. To my mind the ones built since 2000 have lost their way a bit because they've got what I consider too much styling. A Volvo is supposed to look like the wardrobe or the deep freeze you can fit in the back!jblackburn wrote:Speak for yourself. I think the S70 is a great looking sedan. I liked the rear of the 96-97 850's a lot too.Jono51 wrote:Not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings here, but I think this thread is becoming a little boring. So I feel the need to say the 850 sedan is not my idea of a nice looking car. To me it is just so obvious that this series was styled primarily as a wagon and the sedan is just an afterthought created by chopping a hunk out of the back end. In fact the last Volvo that looked any good as a sedan was the 144 ... just my opinion of course.
If God had meant cars to have fuel injection, he never would have given us the SU carburetter

I'm drawn to the new BMW 4-cyl 240hp motor like a moth to a flame. Only this moth doesn't have $40k for a 3-series or X1. I'll wait until there are used ones with a manual on the market.
That engine has been reported to have a great deal more than 240hp.

I get dizzy with the amount of back-and-forth I do when it comes to whether or not I keep the quirky thing. I swear, everytime I turn around there's some issue - big or small - that keeps rearing it ugly head. But I did buy it cheap, and I don't have to make payments, and it does have the knack to start everytime I turn the key. Those factors keep me in place & prevent me from adding another car payment I can't afford.
If I did have the extra cash lying around my choice would probably be the new Cadillac ATS. I'm a huge fan of the European sports sedans/wagons. I've owned them and had a similar love/hate relationship, but I really like how Cadillac ignored the bean-counters, locked themselves in a room and aimed high with this all-new vehicle. It's got 2.0L 4-cyl with 272 HP routed to the rear wheels, LSD, Magnetic Ride Control suspension, Brembos, etc, that can achieve 30 MPG hwy. Not bad for a car for around $37K.
But then again, I don't have that change lying around, thus I'm driving an 18 YO turbo brick that coughs smoke if you sit too long at red light.

I wish they'd put the 2.0t in the Cruze. I'd be all over one - great driving dynamics for a FWD; just needs more power. 100 HP would be good

I for one applaud for that. I don't know if I can speak for everyone but my S70 is great. not sure I mention this before but I bought it sight unseen with 77,000 miles on it for 3000 dollars on eBay. I had to fly from Virginia to Miami to pick it up, and had a 950 mile test drive home. a CV axle tie rod end in power steering pump later fred is like new. that's it's name Fred. the civics name was Priscilla, and the Beamers name is crack baby. fred is the best!
Maybe you bought yours too soon?jblackburn wrote:I wish they'd put the 2.0t in the Cruze. I'd be all over one - great driving dynamics for a FWD; just needs more power. 100 HP would be good

Here's the 4 door version that could be coming if they can make up their minds:

I guess enjoy yours for a little while longer and then trade up to one of these if & when they hit the dealer lots.
