1992-2000 Volvo Family — Reflecting on the 850/S70/V70/XC70

MVS Volvo Forum user wheeler000 started up a good discussion today about his S70, and how he’s hooked. so we reflected on 1992-2000 Volvo Family

“I finally realized today that despite my constant worrying about the Volvo, the fact that things rattle and shake and get stuck and go out of whack and there always seems to be some part that cost as much as a used Honda Civic to repair going bad on it, and it seems to be such a hodgepodge of parts, part Italian part Japanese part Swedish, and God only knows how it all works together, and the fact that the aluminum engine is constantly subject to a bad tensioner bearing or something destroying the whole thing, and that it is in general every bit as finicky as a high end BMW and not nearly as pretty… that I love it and all that stuff has somehow become a source of pride. I feel like I must protect it from those who would not keep it running. My baby ain’t going to no junk yard.”

Well said. I don’t agree with every point, especially the looks, but overall not far off the aggregate P80 devotee’s opinion.

I think the front fender/quarterpanel makes the car, visually. I finally put my finger on it while staring at my 850 one day recently. The wheel arch, the fender flare, the slope that meets the hood — there wasn’t a better shape in all of the 1990s automotive design IMHO. The lower the car, the more this gorgeous shape is pronounced.

I have a 98 S70 Volvo that turns over but does not run it died on my daughter, took it to this small town shop but they do not work on Volvos after a month I took it out of there and looked at it myself the timing belt is good and checked the main relays and found a starter relay which has a 5 proms and shows one to be burned could this be the problem and what would cause this relay to burn if this is the case.

I had to laugh when I read this… so it’s not just me that feels obligated to keep this car going. I love the car when it’s right, I threaten to junk it when it’s not, but each time I find the fix to keep it on the road. I really would miss it if it were gone, it’s become a 214,000 mile friend (1998 V-70XC)on my journey through life.

Is anybody looking for a Volvo V70 auto, 2000, 2.4 petrol for spares and repairs? Its in perfect condition apart from the gearbox, which has just gone! Cream leather interior, heated seats. New battery put in last month. 1 lady owner from new. 95786 on the clock. Full service history.
