1992 Volvo GL-Horn not working

Post by creeposaurus »

Hello everyone. I've recently bought a 92 Volvo GL that runs very well for a car with 227k miles on it. Other than unexplainable stains that needed to be cleaned on the inside and a small trans fluid leak that need to be fixed and replaced, it works beautifully. The only problem that really concerns me is the horn not working.

I've checked the fuse and its alright, the horn itself is working (checked by connecting to a battery), but it seems there may be a problem with the wiring. I would be grateful for any suggestions or advice

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Which model do you have? The 240 and the 940 both had the GL.

Check the ground connection on the center of the horn. It's been the culprit twice on my 940

If i remember right, it's a size 20 Torx. Any auto parts store should have one that would fit. You'll probably want to disconnect the battery first just as a safety measure. After you remove the two bolts, the steering wheel pad will come right off. It's connected to the wheel via a small ribbon cable. Unhook the ground wire in the center and clean both connections. That should take care of your problem

:D Lucky me!! I was fiddling around my toolbox trying to find a torx bit that would fit into the holes on the back of the steering wheel of the 940 , and lo and behold I find out this car came with a toolkit!!!, hidden in the right rear side panel behind a door with a turnknob on it. I opened it and the long torx bit I needed was sitting right there!. Volvo knew we'd need this thing for the steering wheel I guess. So I popped off the airbag, and yes my wires were everywhere and touching the metal on the back of the airbag. I tighten everything down with zipties and the horn works like new again! :D

I'll post a pic of that torx bit when I get a chance. makes life so much easier.
