I have recently started to work on my car, since it is entering winter i decided to wait for a new paint job, so i started with minor engine work. When i bought the car, the valve covers were covered in what looked like burnt oil. I tried steel wool, sandpaper, neither did it, so i broke out my dremel tool. I didnt use any metal heads, but i had this head that seemed like mini pieces of sand paper all around the head, it totally removed the stain, but now the metal looks "uneven" . Any ideas? or am i gonna have to live with that look over the ugly oil stain?

You're probably better off finding a used one and slapping that on to your engine. Can you post pictures ?

I second that and go a stage further with a tip from a master coach builder (Rolls Royce trained). Use nothing less than 1200 grit wet & dry, on a backing pad, with plenty of water and a block household soap. Apparently that was how Rolls body finishers did it.

are you talking about the plastic cover that says "volvo 24 valve" or the aluminium piece?

I would just buy a new plastic cover ( i got a spare one from an engine replacement) or look at your local junk yard. If its aluminium then do what the people above say above.
