Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

dex/merc or dex VI for 2000 S80?

Post by fn42 »

what's the consensus on trans fluid for the 4T65EV? Will dex vi give better performance or should I stick to the original dex iii or dex/merc?

Dexron VI is the new low viscosity formula. For GM automatic transmissions it is listed as backwards compatible. GM quit licensing D-III and now makes D-VI and some other fluids to use in power steering and manual transmissions where D-VI is not approved.

ok thanks, I thought they were still licensing III - so VI approved fluid should be a better choice than something like MaxLife dex/merc ?

At this point I've run both Dexron III and VI in my T6 without appreciably ill or great effect. VI would be a nice treat for it, but you'll need to do a fluid exchange to really get all the old crud out, thats going to be spendy.

Personally, I think I'd just get the 5 gallon pail of Dex\Merc from OReillys and exhange with that instead.

that's what I ended up doing, I didn't want to do 2/3 dran+fills at $10/qt

the rear main was replaced at a volvo dealership prior to me purchasing the car and they topped the trans off with dex/merc so I just went with that

thanks for the help guys

Yeah cheapest VI I've seen has been supertech\walmart at around $5/qt. I think having fresh fluid in there is probably more important than the difference between III and VI.
