HELP: Cam/Crank Seal Blown 99 S80. Fix Tips Please!!?

Post by zacharyzoosh »

Hello Forum Members. I'm looking for a few tips on replacing the Cam and Crank Seals on a 1999 Volvo S80 T6.

I have the timing covers off, and I have the parts removed around the rear of the cams.

I bought a cam and timing kit made for Volvos, as pictured below. How do I use this kit?

My need for help starts here.

I'm not sure which part of the tools to start with? I've seen some pictures of this tool in use, but its not obvious with the actual motor in front of me about how to proceed from here.
If anyone can write up a procedure for this job it would be ENORMOUSLY HELPFUL! If nobody does it, and if I figure it out with your help, surely, I will do the write up after its finished, because it seems that the PCV gets clogged on these and lots of people have this problem. This one was leaking like a ****!.. when I bought it. 150k, apparently after a little fender bender it started leaking. Oil is all through out the timing belt area, so that's why I'm going for these seals.
But for now, before I blindly start pulling everything apart...
Please help me with tips!

Do I need to remove the valve cover at all? I was hoping that the rear cam seals would open up easily, but so far, the front is just a plastic seal cover, and the rear has an aluminum cover with the cam position sensor in it, and under that, the end of the cam with a 10mm bolt in it.

Doesn't look self explanatory how I use this kit to hold the cam.

Please help, and pardon me if I seem naive. I appreciate any teaching sent my way.
Thanks!

You are in for a treat.

The seals can be changed without removing the cam cover if I remember correctly. Most likely you have a clogged PCV system which has lead to those seals blowing out. To to fcpeuro.com and order the PCV service kit for your car, otherwise you'll be doing the job all over again.

The cam tool you have bolts onto the rear of the motor. You will need to remove the plastic cap on the intake cam and the metal camwheel on the exhaust.

Search this board for "VVT" as you will need to know how to set the VVT timing if you remove the cam sprockets. Just lining the marks up generally won't work, VVT has to be set correctly.
