Headliner Fabric Seperating From Backing

Thanks for the tip. Hearing about the $66 brings tears of joy to my eyes! I was figuring it would cost more than $100 for a new headlining. Can you tell me which shop you used (I live near RTP) ? Thanks.

I'm thinking it was Shue's in Charlotte. The fabric wasn't a perfect match to the original, but then the original was hanging down everywhere .

(But is the board itself usually deteriorated, or being fiberglass is it mainly just the foam and fabric that are trashed?)
My fiber board was in great shape. Took a while to clean it up. I cleaned it up and stuck it back in, propped it up and drove 50 miles to Charlotte to drop it off and the same when it was done.

Nice, makes sense. Foam and fabric usually do deteriorate way faster than fiber stuff. That's good news.

Sounds like getting this taken care of is mostly about the time and patience to R&R the board rather than parts cost... Although I assume they'll be some $$ spent to obtain replacement plastic pieces considering some of them are already cracked before being removed... Probably space dust when I touch them!

I hadn't thought of it, but of course VIDA covers interior stuff too. Guess I should start reading all that stuff, get familiar with how it's all put together...

The "replacing headlining" section from VIDA follows. Interesting, they recommend removing the headliner diagonally through the front right door. This is from the "4DR w/SRS" section, matching my car..

Replacing headlining

Open sun roof completely
Disconnect battery negative lead

Remove:
Sun visor (2 screws) with holder (turn and pull out)
Front roof lighting panel (pry off lens with a screwdriver). See Electric motor and gear unit, replacement
Rear view mirror (2 screws). See Replacing rear view mirror
Front seal grab handles. Open cover with a screwdriver at the top and remove 2 screws. Insert screwdriver at the top and twist handle down.
Rear seat grab handles. Pry off lens with a screwdriver and disconnect connector. Otherwise same method as for front seat grab handles
B-post panel. Pull away. Leave the panel hanging in the seat belt.
Cantrail panel between A- and B-posts. Pull away
Cantrail panel between B- and C-posts. Pull away.
* Note! Retaining clip behind B and C-post panels. Remove carefully by the C-post.
Fold front seat backrests backward.
2 retaining clips at rear edge of headlining
Edge molding around sun roof opening. Pull down.
Slide headlining forward past C-post panels
Carefully place headlining over front seal folded backrests and dashboard
Cables on top of headlining (taped). Mark cable routing on headlining
Move gear selector lever to fourth gear or "L" for automatic transmissions
Adjust steering wheel: up and in as far as possible
Carefully lift the headlining diagonally through right front door opening.
Caution! Do not bend the headlining

Duh!!
I guess at the right angle it should come out the door. They got it in there somehow. I put all the parts in different baggies and left them in the car.

It gets worse, searching around the boards, some people say good luck getting the board out the door without removing the seats too. This might be why some folks recommend getting it out the trunk. Seems logical enough to me.

If you have a sunroof NEVER remove the headliner out the trunk.
It is very easy to remove the headliner out the front passenger door.

I have done this on many 850 and s70s. And will be doing a write up for a c70 coupe once i get to it on the wifes c.

Try not to bend the headliner board. Think of it like cardboard, once you bend it, it becomes weak.

For the 850 it wont be much different from the write up i did on my s70.

Only big change is you may end up cutting the sunvisor wiring and reattaching that.

I would avoid removing it via the trunk on a sedan as you will have to bend it in order to remove it.
Simply chalk your wheel, slide the shifter all the way back and jimmy it out the front pass door.

Careful with the sunroof trim as you may break it. Roll it up and towards the center to release how it clips in.



The sunroof glass has to come out to do the slide.
Remove the 4 screw bolts, lay a towl down behind glass on roof, lay glass on towl, unclip shade, remove.

If you cut the sun visor wires disconnect the battery first.

Our 850 requires this but I am so putting it off. Looks far worse than an evaporator replacement. And stuff breaks, after 17 years of sitting in the sun.
