Cone air filter for volvo 850 non-turbo?

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

They aren't made for the turbo's either. All the ones you see out there are after-market items. My suggestion is you leave what you have in your car, but instead, use a K&N filter. It will be good for a few HP's on your non-turbo. Really, the OEM airbox and intake are about as good as it gets. You can ask those who put in the cone filters and "special" intakes on theirs. Most will agree with me.

I understand that every car is different, but I know that on most cars that I have heard of (except for crazy sports cars) the intake and exhaust systems come from the factory with a lot of restrictions, both for controlling volume and for making the car just drive "friendlier" for the general population... I always hear people say that some kind of cold-air intake type thing for NA volvos is not worth it, and I guess I haven't seen anyone actually explain/give data for why it is that Volvo's factory setup is so perfect already...

I'm not trying to be antagonistic AT ALL, I just want to understand my cars better, and to figure out how to get the most out of them that I can. I'm an engineer, so I have this innate need to figure everything out ;)

The hose already comes from the front of the car and is almost straight into the air box. I was just repeating what I have read from other's experiences. If you want to add a cone filter, fine, but isolate it from the heat of the engine. I've seen people take out the panel filter in the air box and add a cone filter in there instead...seems that might be a decent alternative.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a 1996 850 N/A, that i recently bought. In my opinion the volvo 5 cylinder is arguably the best sounding engine ever made with the VR6 (2.8>3.2 imo) being a close second. The growl is just amazing, and nothing really comes close to it. As a result i am trying to figure out how to add a not-box filter to bring out some more engine sound. Don't get me wrong, I know the N/A is never going to be fast and the stock system pulls cool air from just behind the grill, but that doesn't mean that it's not worth adding to the driving experience.

The simplest way to do this would be to add a cone filter directly onto the MAF sensor. But there is another hose that is pulling filtered air coming from the top half of the airbox. This leaves me with 2 possibilities, 1) figure out what this hose does and determine if i could plug it off. If not i could put a small boat/scooter intake filter on it and secure it somewhere, or 2) build a short extension with a hose port.

I will flip through my haynes manual to try to understand what the functionality of this hose is and determine the flow rates to get the appropriate sized filter if i go that route.

As for the heat soak issue it would be pretty easy to buy a sheet of aluminium from lowes/home depot and cut and bend something to size, leaving room for the stock air ducting from the grill to keep the cool air coming.

In the mean time, something to listen to until i get this sorted out

Sounds like the SAS hose.

It's part of your emissions system and bypassing it isn't as easy as just plugging the hole.

Attaching a cone filter to your MAF does work (that's what I did on my 760 Turbo) and sounds good, but that SAS is going to be a hassle. I'd say just leave the stock airbox in there.

On MVS there's a air box thermostat mod for NA which seems to be an effective tweak.

Sorry to bring this thread from the dead, but i went ahead and installed a generic autozone cone air filter directly to the MAF. I used the bottom of the stock airbox to block any possible water splashing up into the filter, block some heat from the exhaust manifold, and it allowed me to keep the air feed from the front grill

To address the "other hose" which is in fact the secondary air induction pump i used a "breather filter." Since the SAP pulls filtered, but not metered air, this should suffice.

There were two vacuum lines that ran off of the top of the airbox, both filtered and not metered. The white one runs to some sort of sensor that is located on top of the radiator. This vaccum line seems to pull a constant vacuum and the engine does not seem to be effected by blocking it off (i.e. does not give a signal to the fuel pressure regulator) the other activates the hot side/cold side air intake.

The car:
1996 non-turbo 850 wagon
225,xxx miles
automatic.

Mileage before 27.82 (over 1000 miles)-air filter was ~50% used, standard paper filter.
Mileage after 27.817 ( over 377 miles)
Both trips were done on the same interstates between Tennessee and Virginia, all highway miles. 93 octane with ~10% ethanol (BP). Windows were up for all driving with the outside temperature fluctuating between 61*F and 77*F.

There is a definite growl that comes from the hood at 3/4+ throttle above 3k RPM. Otherwise the car sounds completely stock. In "sports" mode, there feels to be a little bit more power at higher RPM's, i did not do any FATS runs or 0-60 to confirm this, but with no downside alittle bit more engine sound on demand, i'm a very happy Volvo owner.
