Dashboard brake light

Post by xcowner »

My dashboard brake light started going on then off . Now its on all the time. Is that an indication of a worn or stuck caliper? Sorry for the dumb ? but i dont have a manual.

What year XC do you have?

Are you saying Brake light or ABS light. If it's the ABS light for XC's through '01, then you probably need to have your ABS control module rebuilt (much cheaper than the $800 or so the dealer will quote you for a new one plus r&r). Victor Rocha, a member here does it for about $150 and gives you instructions on how to take it out and put it back in. After '01, my understanding is that it's a different system and Victor can't repair them.

If it's the brake light, I would suspect that the brake sensor under the brake pedal has moved. Get up under it with a flash light and see. You can bend the bracket it is in and adjust it back to where the plunger switch works like it should again. Or if that doesn't work then you might be in need of a new sensor in that spot.
