Re: engine noise question

can i hijack this thread? i also have en engine noise and a video, but i don't like making threads if there's already a similar one

there should just be an Engine Sound Thread where everyone posts his engine sound video and everyone else tells him it's not a problem

mine is a problem though

awriiiight thanx

may i first apologize for the quality of the video...first you hear the Volvo Fuel Injector Percussive Symphony Orchestra, then a useful noise for like five seconds, then the Volvo Electric Ukulele Simulator and some vague revs with no real audio

that said...in the few useful seconds of video (from 0:10 to 0:15, the later bits might be useful i guess), you can hear the very lopey idle. it used to be smooth, then i got off the highway yesterday, came to a stop sign, and freaked out. i nursed the car home under 2000rpm and made sure there was still oil in it. afterwards, i started it and took the video.

it's not a mechanical noise, since i hear it loudest out of the exhaust, so i'm not worried about my bottom end churning itself to bits (unless there's gasoline in the oil, i guess). that in mind, i took it to work today, and it drove and sounded fine on the highway. my avg-mpg-o-meter actually went up by 0.1 and the poor idle even smoothed itself out a bit, though it's still there.

in addition, i've noticed over the last week or so something that sounds like a steel panel vibrating, like a diving board in a cartoon. it is intermittent. it goes away before i can track it down.

any ideas? maybe a leaky exhaust port on one cylinder?

the engine noise sounded fine at the front of the car. not sure what you mean about a "lopey idle" the idle was not fluxuating at all...it stayed right at 1000rpm until you tapped the throttle. there are heat sheilds under the car which could be making a racket...take a look under the car and see what you can find. the exhaust system/muffler is one piece from the cat/downpipe to the tailpipe so unless it is cracked somehow the only spot for an exhaust leak is at the junction behind the cat.

i guess lopey isn't the word i'm looking for. at the exhaust pipe, the noise used to be a relatively smooth tone. now it is a discrete series of events - glubglubglubglubglub rather than rrrrrrrrrrr, if you know what i mean.

Maybe one of your cylinders are not firing as strong. Have you changed plugs lately?

no, but maybe i should give them a look this weekend if i get a moment.

between every other rattle and squeak this car makes, i don't even know where to start figuring it out. it seems like there's a new one every day.
