S-70 Power Windows....overheating.

Post by North42g »

Hello again,
My 99 S70 2.4 N/A is having issues again.
here's what is happening:
No Power Windows or Side view mirror adjustment - at all, nothing.
I am able to remove the switch and jumper to all windows up and down. ( haven't tried elect. mirrors )

After reading through thread on this site i realized that the circuit breaker(located in UHJB #37) was not even installed!! Just an empty slot. it is however, looking in tough shape.
The surrounding plastic is all melted and burnt.

I went to the salvage yard a got a few of these metal CB's. I installed one in the #37 slot. Tried the window switch...and it worked...for 15 seconds. Then it stopped working. Even when it was working, the glass moved very slowly, like it was struggling. I understand that these CB will reset on there own.
I removed it and it was very hot to the touch.
I installed a second one. the window worked again for a short period.
The other thing I noticed is that it seems to be getting power to the CB with out touching the window switch. The CB won't cool off until the car is shut down.
I am afraid that this could start a fire!! What do you guys think?
Does anyone have any ideas?
Has anyone seen this before, or know what to do to resolve?
Thanks,
North42g

Take a multimeter and measure the current draw by a good window motor then compare it to the bad one. You can do this by completing the circuit with the meter instead of the fuse. Do the same across the other CB that works fine. If the meter goes off scale (most meters read to 10A) you know you have a problem with the motor or wiring to that circuit.

I will break out the multi-meter in the morning, thanks. I will say that the same thing happens on any of the four windows. Window starts to work then slows down and finally halts when the CB fails(or does what it is supposed to rather.) The problem likely lies with in the circuit and not necessarily the motor. I guess I'll have to rip the fuse box out and check out all the wiring. I just wish there is an easier way.

Power should be at the CB location if the key is on.
It's in the circuit ahead of the window/sunroof system.

And reading current at the CB location won't give you window
motor current draw exclusively. It will also include the switch.

I'm going with BAD WINDOW SWITCH.
Dirty contacts = High current draw.
Clean/Replace the master switch:

I will try to clean them...again, (I have three master switches out in the shop). Likely going to have to get a new one I guess.

Oh, someone has the same fault I do..I bought my car recently (A 98 V70 R) and my windows dont work either, all I get is a fast 'clicking' from the front two window switches on the drivers side switchpack, none of the other window switches make any sort of noise or do anything. I've also checked the breaker (37) by swapping it for one of the electric seat breakers, I've also replaced the switches (albeit with secondhand ones) and it's still the same.. I've had one of the motors unplugged.. and also plugged in a replacement, all this got me was the replacement motor moving Very Slowy....

Looking forward to hearing how you get on...its got me stumped...

Dont know if it's any help but I've managed to fix mine today. It turned out to be the multi plug that goes from the door to the A post, I unplugged it and at least 6 of the wires weren't connecting properly, they had been pushed back into the housing. I cured this by pushing them all back where they should be and then smothering them and the other wires in hot melt glue. Once cured it held all the wires in place and stops them being pushed back, instantly cured my window problems, they all work now.
