88 240 replacement speedo?

Post by mpayson »

I was bored this afternoon & decided to take apart the instrument cluster on my 88 240 wagon to clean some grime on the inside of the clear plastic lens. When I put everything back together, I did something that managed to fry one of the IC's on the speedometer.

My mechanic had a replacement speedo, but he was a bit uncertain as to whather it was compatible or not. The one from my car was labeled with number k9800, the new one was k10042. The pin connections are the same, but the one from my car had a second circuit board on the opposite side that he thought was the reset for the service light. The main circuit board itself appears identical. Can I replace the old one with the new one? My other option is I can try to pull the IC off of the new board and replace the bad one. I don't have a lot of soldering experience, though, so that's not my first choice.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Well, I never got a response here, but a post to a volvo mailing list was able to resolve the problem... FYI: http://lists.subtend.net/pipermail/bric ... 36394.html

So what did you end up doing? The poster gave you a couple of options...I'm curious. Btw, it's nice to be able to tune your car's speedo/odo to the tires you're using. That's a feature not found on my car (that I know of) anyway.
