ABS light on, but speedo and CC work

My '97 850T5 (no TRACs) ABS light has been coming on intermittently, but my CC and speedometer still work. I don't mind paying Victor $140 for a nice ABS rebuild, but want to know that's for sure the problem first. It's not throwing any diagnostic codes. I've heard that a failing ABS unit will also kill the speedo and cruise when the light is on.

They WILL work.
Your ABS is in the early fail stage, Victor is your friend

Eventually the speedo/odo won't work. JRL is right. Send your unit to Victor.
If you commute on an interstate like I do everyday it would be nice to calibrate the RPM's with your actual speed so you'll know about how fast your going without it. It will take about a week after you send your unit off before you get it back. Also, buy yourself an E5 torx bit (to take off your ABS module). If you can't find one, ask Victor to send you one. Don't try to do this with a regular mm socket...you'll buggar up your ABS screws and Victor typically doesn't have extra's.

One day I asked a Volvo mechanic at my garage how I could ascertain if the ABS was functioning correctly on my '95 T5 wagon.

No problems.

He and I jumped into the wagon and he drove until he found some tarmac which had a smooth gravel edge.

He then positioned the wagon with one set of wheels on tarmac and the opposite side on gravel then applied the brakes sharply.

In the gravel where the brakes had been applied were a series of neatly spaced little puckers on the smooth surface that showed where the wheels had locked for a split-part of a second then released-locked-released-locked-released etc.

A simple but very effective test.
