1994 940 dies

Post by cgeese »

Hello everyone. I am new here and have found forum very helpfull.

I recently bought my 1994 940. The person I bought it from replaced radiator not knowing any basic mechanics. He received incorrect radiator-no place for fan switch. Also, he installed fan between radiator and a/c condensor. corrected radiator issue-replaced with correct one and installed correctly. was getting ect fault code so replaced that. found fan not comming on when temp. was above middle of gauge. replaced "cheap" store brand fan switch with fae brand switch-parts store co-manager offered free upgrade. fan comes on with gauge in middle-or just above, but only for about 10 seconds then shuts off. comes back on after 30 seconds then engine dies. Already replaced fan relay, ect, and fan switch. When car dies have to wait 30 minutes to restart. Also, a/c doesn't work. I have seen alot of posts on google about fuel relays. the car runs/drives great untill it gets "hot" then dies as soon as you stop. the temp. gauge never goes much over middle of gauge. Does the a/c have to be functional for cooling fan to work properly? I thought they they were seperate(somewhat) systems? i get no warning of any type before engine dies and no check engine light at all-it does work, comes on with key in on position. checked obd and no codes either. I did ensure to run heater on high when refilling cooling system with 50/50 coolant mix. As I am out of work and this being only vehicle really need to get fixed cheap asap. Thanks.

I believe I found the correct part number. I ordered the connector and insulator from the dealer. found it is the same as the connector on the coil packs on the 960.

Hi. I can't address the radiator/fan issues, but on my 1994 940 I had a problem where the engine would die randomly. It turned out to be the speed sensor (located down the rear of the engine at the firewall). The wires between the sensor head and the connector had deteriorated insulation and were occasionally shorting out, killing the engine. Figuring our the issue was difficult and time consuming, but the actual fix only took a few minutes of time. I suppose I could have wrapped each wire individually with insulating tape, but I decided to buy a brand new unit. Take care.

I read that somewhere else also. I found that problem too. I'm still waiting on the "dealer only" wire connector for the temperature sender. I will probably just repair the crank shaft sensor once I verify no cooling issues. Thanks for the advice.

buy a plug in fan from walmart until you track down the problem.

check tthe cooling fan relay. mine died last week due to a fuel pump relay that died. luckily I keep a spare in the toolbox. swapped it out. started right up. tempermental cars but I love em.
