1990 B18FTM poor performance

Post by Rui »

Hi all,

My car is a 4-cylinder, 8-valve, 1721cc (B18FTM engine) featured with LH Jetronic 2.2 and EZ210K ignition, Garret T2 Turbo with intercooler and ECU controled boost. It doesn't have catalytic converter nor Lambda sond.

I'm having a performance problem mainly at high load and less noticeable in low and middle rpm. The car also developed a tendency to heat a little more at idle. I checked for vacuum leaks, knock sensor but I suspect the MAF is showing signs of wear. This MAF is about 10 years old. Could this be the problem? I hear that when MAFs fail the car stals frequently at idle. That's not my case though... How can I check it?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I have no idea what it could be. It cuts out when the boost gauge peaks.

Decrease in power and increase in engine heat indicate a lean mixture. You mention that there is no Lambda sond (O2 sensor), this is usually a primary input for the ECU, faulty O2 sensors will often cause similar symptoms, I would install and reconnect it. Also check fuel pressure and delivery. Usually when the MAF fails it fails completely and engine goes into limp mode.
