S80 Head Bolts
Re: S80 Head Bolts
I do realize that the last post was in '08 but I'm hoping for a quick response. I am in the same situation, I have a 99 s80 t6, and my mechanic ( not familiar with volvos) is having an issue re assembling top portion of the engine, ( valve/cam cover) . He asked me to look for info on the bolts. Are there special bolts needed to secure the cover, said something like they seem to be too short/ if he tightens them he feels they will strip. Can you email me the pdf file you mentioned in the above posts, they sound like what he needs

You'll need a cam lock tool to lock the cams at the rear/transmission end of the motor. Don't confuse this with a tool that locks the sprockets. Other than that you don't need any other special tools that I can recall. Don't forget to order turbo flange gaskets and soforth if they are not part of your kit already.
If you are handy with computers you can acquire VIDA which is volvo's software, it contains the procedure and specs for these jobs.

I am an ASE MAT. I'm about to retire actually. (my back is killing me at 54 yo) Regarding head bolts on a 2.9 liter Volvo Non-Turbo:
If you do not use new "stretch bolts", you are asking for some definite follow up maintenance after only about 20 hours running time. You will need to re-torque the 14 head bolts over again unless they are new, "stretch" bolts. Seasoned bolts lack this elasticity and will result in a very high likelihood of a re-occurrence of breach in the cylinder head gasket.
In my opinion, these bolts should be replaced every time the cylinder head is re affixed to the block.
Quite frankly,in consideration of the labor involved with this repair; I believe it would be a careless irresponsible action to perform this repair without replacing the cylinder head fasteners.
Thank You.
