I have to get new sway bars? Really?

Post by matthew1 »

My front sway bar's bushings are toast, and squeak when I'm doing parking lot manuouvers. On early 850s the bushings are replacable, but not 1994+, from what I've read.

I've also read some owners have replaced them anyway, and some for some of them it turned into a fiasco and they threw in the towel and bought new sways.

Any thoughts? Anyone tried the replacement?

Sway bars I'd get iPD On sale for $348.50 until next Sunday.

Bushings at eEuroparts Just $11 for two.

Dragos, do you have a URL for that? The TASCA eBay store has no results for that part#.

Nasty looking job on my 1999. Jack motor up a few inches, lowering sub frame, disconnecting steering gear. I wonder why the bushings were vulcanized to to bar on later models.

All those fronts are interchangeable. If you buy an OEM bar, I'd get the thickest one (21.5 mm).

As for what cam on the car, you can tell by looking at the bars. Volvo mixed and matched the bars a lot. The best way to tell what a bar is, is by the paint splotches on it:

front sway bar part #s:
9173982 O.Dia 20 mm (marked red)
9173983 O.Dia 21 mm (marked yellow)
9173471 O.Dia 21.5 mm (marked yellow/blue)

rear sway bar part #s, probable O.Diameter:
9191459 (marked green) 19.5 mm
9191461 (marked yellow) 20 mm
9191462 (marked blue) 20.8 mm
9191494 (marked black) 21 mm

'07 XC70, black, 205k

If I was going to have to pull the sway bar to change the bushings, I'd go IPD.
