'89 760 radio antitheft won't reset...[color=red]HELP![/colo

Post by bill r »

I bought an '89 760 Turbo Intercooler Wagon about two months ago. When I bought the car I watched the former owner try to enter the code on the sr-7145 radio (with tp 7145) while the display showed 'codE'. He had just replaced the battery.

After 3 attempts the unit locked down and displayed 'OFF'. I later learned from the manual that the 'aut' button must be depressed after entering the code, he hadn't read the instructions. The manual claimed that the unit would reset after 24 hrs.

I have the original code card but am unable to get the unit to reset to the 'codE' mode. I've tried everything from changing the 3-amp fuse on the back of the radio, I tried pulling the radio fuses for a day, I tried disconnecting both the reciever and tape player for a week, I tried disconnecting the battery, I tried leaving the ignition key on the first click then leaving the radio power on (with the display still showing 'OFF') for 2 hrs...4 hrs....12 hrs....my battery died after about 18 hrs but I was trying to reach 24 hrs.

Does anybody have any ideas? Is there an internal reset switch? Is there a condition where the radio will not reset?

You have to put the key in the ignition and turn it one click. Let it sit for about an hour and a half and the radio will then display enter code

Thanks volvolover, but it didn't work. I actually tried your sequence for 24+ hours (I had a slow charger on the car this time so that my battery wouldn't die) with no luck. The radio continues to dumbly stare at me with 'OFF' displayed.

Perhaps there's a small coin-type battery in the radio which is dead. I'll give it a quick look as a last attempt, then it goes to the trash. Damn.

I'm ready to drop a couple of hundred bucks for a new one, but all I really care for is just to get radio reception again for my morning drive.
