I called Erie. They have them for $45 Each and they are on the way here. Used naturally but as you indicated, with a warranty. I hope they are in working order.
The right side fan has now quit again and is setting a 417 code. So I am glad I ordered both.

Climate Control ECC Codes & Fan Fix
Both used fan/temp probe units arrived and I installed them last night. Both are in working order but were FILTHY with lint. I removed the existing codes and no new ones have been set so far.
I consider the job finished and will start a new thread if new codes are set.
I am also going to attempt to disassemble and lube the old units. I will start a new post outlining the ordeal if I am successful at it.

I know of no way to test the resistor pack. The usual way is to replace it with a known good unit. Its an expensive way to go but I see no alternative. The resistor pack itself, when disassembled is loaded with surface mount circuitry that would not be easy to diagnose without a wiring and logic diagram. Then, even if you were skilled enough to locate a failed component on the circuit board, it would take alot of specialized, read expensive, equipment to replace it.
I replaced the resistor and the blower motor at the same time. EEUROPARTS was the cheapest.
What codes were you getting?

Steve & Bill of Durham,
fuse # 31 is good as well as fuse # 5.
The AC unit is currently discharged. The evaportor went bad earllier this year.
I had the following codes before replacing the heater core & thermostat and before removing and testing the blower fan:
Note: Error codes shown with ** have been around since April 2005 when the ECC unit was replaced. The self adjustment mode 9-9-9 was used after replacing ECC unit.
1-3-5** (note: temp. guage on dash works)
2-1-1
2-3-5**
3-2-1**
3-2-5 ** (note: recirculation damper opens and closes using ECC switch)
4-1-1 ** (note: blower fan works fine - high speed using jumper wire to provide a GRD)
4-1-4
4-1-8
4-1-9
I used the haynes manual to find the diagnostic codes. I have not checked the components associated with each error code except as noted.
After replacing the heater core & thermostat and testing the blower unit, i read all of the above codes and reset the diagnostic unit.
I have driven the car, the fan does not work. I now only have 2 codes in the diagnostic unit: 2-3-5 & 4-1-8 which I previously had.
I also read the A/C heater section of the 1995 manula posted on online. Many of the component tests require you to hook up a VOLVO test unit and check voltage/restistance/etc. across test unit pins and components.
I do have access to another 850 to borrow componets from in order to isolate the faulty compenents.
Any thoughts?
Todd
I will post this same reply on the other posting as well.

I just discovered this web site. Have '93 850 GLT(165K and original to family) with ECC faults and am in process of trying to get blower to work. Have volvo factory book as well as Haynes. Replaced motor from FCP Groton. (Live 40 miles from them. Go right to store. Great folks.) No luck. Have metered a short in power stage. Joined VCOA for 15% discount at dealer. Have found short in both temp sensor/motors and removing these required lowering roof lining to get at screws. Both motors turn freely. Have faults on all damper motors too. According to wiring diagram the ground is common to them. Am trying to replace anything that the meter says is bad(have had faults for a while and they just sort of accumulated without my knowing it until REC/ACC lights just recently flashed. Admit I am somewhat wandering around and it is uncomfortable. Don't want to get new ECC if I have fault codes elsewhere that may cure problem. Am ordering new power stage from FCP($99). Discount price at dealer still higher. It is my wife's car. I have been her resident mechanic for 30+ years and gently told her no more fancy shmancy automatic stuff. My Ram 1500 pickup is stripped and a joy to maintain. Have a web site to share that may work for some repairs. It is BBA Remanufacturing. They could not fix my ABS module but it was not for not trying. Nice folks.
Eric: What codes are you finding?
Also, The Temp sensors and fan unit can still be bad even if the fan does turn freely by hand. I bought mine used from Erie Vovo.

My codes are:, 135,211,311,312,313,314,413,414,416,417,418. They did not all crop up at once but I cannot tell you when and it what order they came up. Some I have had for a while. The fan quit and a week later the flashing lights came on. This happened recently. I have a dead AC system that I have to fix. There is a leak in a seal below the drier, but that did not affect the fan. According to the Volvo book it appears that plumbing problems common to all AC systems do not get recorded by the ECC. This ECC seems to be just some fancy way to govern fan speed and damper positions; things we did in the 60's with 2 levers and a fan switch. I am suspicious of al the damper motor failures. Did buy one new temp sensor/fan. Parts guy said buy one($80 with 15% discount) and see what this does. Have not installed yet. Am buying one part at a time to see if I have success. Much less efficient than dealer approach but.....
This repair is not pretty to talk about.

I would install the temp sensor/fan unit(s) and resistor pack to get the blower working again, then remove the codes. See which ones reset. Diagnosing any new codes that reset should wait until you get the a/c system operational again.

Took car to Hartford dealer where I get parts and car came from in '93. Decided that with what I have done to no avail that based on factory manual diagrams etc that the only thing left is 'black box' control module behind dash. Since it is and expensive electrical part I wanted them to trouble shoot and replace. Joined VCOA recently to get discount. Dealer is indeed changing out control module when part($730 minus 15%) arrives Tues. The dealer was very concerned about what might have led up to this failure. I am sure they do not want to fry a new module at these prices. Mine is fried. Had no warning so nothing else they can look at; just plug in a new one and pray. The part is not hard to remove, according to manual but it is electrical and mucho expensive. I appreciate their concern but I decided that the labor cost is cheap insurance. The factory manual has all the info on the manual AC system and this problem and expense does not exist in that system. The better mousetrap I think.
