Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
You may be able to lubricate it but you need to remove it first. Once you have the motor out try a little silicone based oil on the bearing.

This is a straight lift from the site so doesn't imply you have replaced a 240 unit which is a great deal harder than the 740.Heater Blower Motor Replacement. [Query:] [Response 1: Kevin Lawler] If you have done several 240's you should be able to do a 740 blower motor with your eyes closed! Remove the under dash hush panel on the passenger side. Next remove the right side kick panel over the fuel ecu, then remove the 2 screws holding the ecu and remove the ecu. next remove the 3 screws holding the ECU bracket, and remove the bracket. Now remove the 5 screws holding the blower motor in place and remove the blower motor. Remove the ground wire from the old motor and unplug the power wire. Install new motor in reverse order. Some cutting and modification may be required depending on the style of the motor. I have done several of these, always in less than 1 Hr. [Response 2: Ney] The only important tip is to remember to disconnect the battery, because the ECU may need to be removed in order to gain access to the blower. Also remember the small black wire with self-tapping screw is ground.

Hello - I was having the same issue on my '91 740, and followed the directions above to successfully remove the blower motor.
Now that I have the motor out and in my hands, I'm trying to figure out how to get it apart to lubricate the spot where the sound is coming from. Where should I be trying to lubricate it, and how?

In this photo, the center of the fan appears to have an open hole; mine does not. Is that what I should be getting at?

Buy a replacement. These things are installed with the fan bearing at the lowest part of the system. If any moisture/condensation gets into the ventwork, it eventually settles to the bearing on the blower fan. This bearing will eventually fail. A new unit will not solve the problem, but it should be good for 5-10 years. A used replacement will probably fail MUCH sooner. IPD or FCPGroton around $100.

Well, when I get back to Denver, I suppose I'll order a replacement. By the way, Kirby, I had to laugh - I grew up in Hendersonville and am back there right now for a visit.

Finished it up today with a new blower motor. I got an aftermarket from O'Reilly because it was cheap and handy - it fit right in and works like a champ. I'd gotten so used to the screaming-banshee sounds of the old one it was actually a little strange to turn the air on and only hear...air.
