['96 850 T5] problem after distributor cap&rotor replacement

Post by fapers »

Hello,

I was hoping that maybe someone could give me a hint on what I've done wrong during distributor cap and rotor replacement (some mechanik advised me to as he calimed it was burned and may start causing trouble). Well after I replaced it and put everything back together engine seemed to work fine (just as it did before). However when i took it for a drive today I noticed that engine would start to brake (cut) during acceleration. I believe it was getting worse and worse during the day since it happened everytime I started from a stop and the lambda light went on.

I'm seriously thinking what did I miss or do wrong....he is a few things that may help identifying the problem:
- it was not possible to install distributor cap or rotor in a wrong position (screw set up etc.)
- the battery was disconnected all time
- I tripple checked and I'm over 99% sure I connected everything back in place.
- BUT when I look back I'm not sure if I saw a rotor cover there...I just don't remember it...Maybe I just did everything autamatically and just didn't pay attention to it or it actually may have stayed in the old distributor cap and I didn;t put it back on.... - could missing rotor cover cause such problems????

thanks everyone in advance for your help...

The rotor cover wouldn't really cause any grief if it is gone so long as you aren't leaking around the camshaft seal. What brand did you use as replacements? Those are Bosch only items.

The only other thing I can think of is if a spark plug wire was on the edge when you removed it and transferring it to the new cap further damaged it.

The manuals are all wrong on the plug wire locations but it will barely run at all if you follow the book numbering.

thanks for hints...I must say that indeed there is some leak near the distributor cap from beneath the upper plastic engine cover, however it did not cause any problems of this type before.

however it seems that I probably solved the problem...I believe that it was caused by RPM or Camshaft sensor wire going too close to ignition coil and spark plug wires....these are all pretty old and must have interferred signal from one of these sensors...moved the wires away, cleared the error codes and so far the problem is gone....at least this one since I got a new one now with ABS...

thanx again
