96 850 braking problem (ABS?)

Post by dgamby »

Hey all,

Having some fun issues with my wife's Volvo 850. She went to stop at a light going a "medium speed" and she pressed on the pedal and it went down without engaging the brakes, after about a second or two she felt a high speed vibration in the pedal and the car started stopping which I think may have been the ABS engaging. The ABS light came on immediately after she felt the brake pedal shudder. The car then braked normally for the rest of her way home.

The ABS light has come on and off a somewhat frequently over the last few months and she has felt something like this before but this was the worst episode.

So I'm wondering if this sounds like I need a new ABS module or if it might be something else. Any light you can shed would be helpful!

Start by cleaning the sensors and reluctance rings on the front axles. Sounds like something is gunked up and causing the ABS to flip out rather than the module itself being bad.

Alright I'll start with that. I'm guessing if I search I can track down a guide for that on here.
