No start when weather turns cold.

Post by 90_244 »

I have a 240 with LH 2.4 that refuses to start. This is what I have found:
The engine can be started with starter fluid when cold, but will idle high even after it has reached normal operating temp. Diagnostics on terminal 2 gave a 1-2-3 code, replaced the ECT. Car was brought in when it was about 50f, but temp has dropped to 38f during days, i.e. car would start when it was dropped off and now it will not. Probed terminal 2 on ignition control unit to terminal 13 on the ECU (ECT circuit) and got 5400 ohms which is OK for 38f. Removed cold start injector and found it was leaking. Replaced injector. Removed hose from fuel pressure regulator and there is no fuel leaking past the diaphragm. Did a fuel pressure test and got 43 psi at idle, 90 psi dead-head.

Currently: Cold start injector will not fire when engine is turned over, but if I ground one of the terminals on it it will spray and does not leak after ground is removed.

If I clean the plugs and start it (with starter fluid-eek!), it has a high idle and will foul the plugs out but will run OK. Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Still has code 1-2-3. Probed from ECM to ignition control unit for ECT (coolant temp sensor) circuit resistance, found to be in spec for temperature. Checked grounds on intake, dealer says sometimes these can cause erratic problems. Sanded grounding point, soldered new lug on, even sanded the grounding bolt, no difference. Checked ECT wires and Cold start injector wires for possible grounding to frame, no problems found. Throttle switch is new and clicks very close to shut position.

Had it hard start (3-4 min cranking) on me in 60f weather, so cold start injector is not problem. When hard start occurs, it will not take any throttle until the engine has warmed up. After warm-up drove it 200 miles and the plugs were clean. I'm running out of ideas. Anything else I can check?
