04 S40 2.0D starting problems

First post on here by an owner becoming very frustrated with my
S40 which has starter problems.

The car runs perfect and is great to drive but if for example I drove 20mins to the shops, pulled in, got what I needed, started up again, went to fill up with diesel, when I go to start the car again it won't start, it turns over but won't go. If left for half an hour it will start up first fire! This is occurring more and more and is driving my partner and myself crazy! It's got to the stage we keep the car ticking over if stopping for short periods! Also when starting there is a lot of engine vibration and today whilst it was having its tantrum I opened the bonnet to be met by a serious blast of heat (could it be an overheating problem?) also sometimes will start and tick over but won't take the revs when accelerator is pressed!? any advice on what you think the problem is, would be great as we love the car and dont want to have to change with a wedding around the corner!
