Hello All,
I have an '04 xc90 with about 105,000 miles. I just had it services, (control arm bushings and upper engine mount) and after about a week with very limited use the check transmission warning came on. My wife was driving it on our street and came right home. I got in and when I put it in drive it seems to take a second or two for the tranny to "engage." I will be taking it back to Volvo to get looked at.
Any suggestions as to what this might be? Could this somehow be tied to the timing belt (which I have not done yet)? Any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Joe

I don't know this car well but transmission and timing belt are pretty disconnected in function.
Hopefully just a transmission oil change will fix your problem.

The timing belt and transmission are pretty much exclusive. Impossible to diagnose exactly what could be wrong by the symptoms you quoted but it sounds like it could be solenoid issue. Hopefully you are covered by some kind warranty because Volvo only replaces transmissions, never do they repair. If you don't have a warranty go to a known reputable transmission shop.

so it looks like the culprit is a gear position sensor. Volvo told me $600 to replace it. I can do small repairs but unfortunately this one is over my head. All the Genuine Volvo parts stores I check on line have the part at around $190 (USD). I doubt I am looking at $400 in labor. This one hurts.....thanks for the assistance everyone.
