Starter?

Post by '95_960 »

I have 1995 european edition 960 with the 2.9l 6cyl. This morning, my sister went to start it and it would'nt. It makes a quiet clicking/knocking noise for a couple of seconds then stops. Obviously I'm guessing it's the starter, but I don't know too much about it. I also can't find the starter. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Matt

I would check the battery first, I think.

I would agree, but go a step further by checking the main battery leads for good contact at the battery terminals and the negative lead where it attaches to the car body.

I can't remember on which side of the engine you will find the starter but it will be at the back and low down. There will be two fairly thick leads coming off the starter solenoid - check these for good connections also.

Thanks guys. I know the battery has full power because I can sit in it and listen to the radio and the instrument panel lights up, etc. I jacked the car up and got underneath it and just couldn't find it.

You still need to check the battery. Clicking knocking noises are way more indicative of a lack of current to the starter and not a bad starter. Because you can listen to the radio and run the instrument lights by no means indicates that your battery is at or even near full power. It will take in the area of 300-500 amps to crank that engine over, make sure that your battery is in good condition. If you cannot find the starter I suggest that you might want to pay someone that is qualified to diagnose the vehicle and let them diagnose and repair it properly.
