87 740 new steering rack problems - need help

Post by Peter Coutts »

I have just had the steering rack and pump replaced but the garage (Canadian Tire Automotive) is having a difficult time getting the air out of the system thereby causing studdering of the steering in either direction...similar to what was happening prior to taking it to the garage. The rack was under replacement warranty but the pump is new. I suspect they didn't follow proper Volvo bleeding process in the first place and now have a problem on their hands. They are now leaving it over the weekend with the front end jacked up in the air hoping to bleed trapped air out over time. Mechanic told me that they have never had to go through such a process on any other make of car.

Does anyone have similar experience and suggestions?

The Volvo bleeding process is simplicity itself.

1. Fill the reservoir to the Max mark.
2. Start the engine and allow it to idle.
3. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock a couple of times. Do not hold on full lock.
4. Top up the fluid if necessary.
5. Repeat 3 & 4 until the fluid level ceases to fall.
