My nephew's 2003 S80 T6 suffered a front end crash. A member here has offered a 2000 S80 (in possible need of an engine) that we're considering but would involve a road trip of considerable distance. Looks like Volvo went from a 2.8 liter to a 3.0 in 2002. Will the 2003 motor fit into the 2000, utilizing all of the 2003 computers and other peripherals? I know they're both first generation.
If not, then I guess I'm looking for a 2003 donor vehicle!
thanks,
scott in upstate NY

Hello gsbeliever,
The engine your son had was the B6294T and the 2000 T6 has the B6284T. Basically, the older engine is just a destroked version of the newer one, the newer one being a twin turbo variant of the original N/A model. (possibly to reduce manufacturing costs) From the looks of the mounts, it appears that the engine should be able to be swapped. Obviously the ECU and all the other things must go with it as well. As for the need to program it to recognize all the other electronics, I am not sure. That could be a whole other issue.

Thanks for your advice. Could be a crap-shoot using a different year, so looks like my best bet is to find another 2003. There are a bunch of salvage S80s at different sites but 95% of them have front end damage (like my nephew's).

If you want to swap a LOT of pieces it will work. You will need to make the 2000 into your 2003 in every way but the chassis stamped VIN. If that is legal or passable in NY is another story. I sort of doubt it is.
The CEM on your car is VIN coded. The ECM is "married" to the CEM. The keys are married to the CEM and cut for the lock cylinders on your 2003 steering column and for its doors and trunk lid. You can see we're talking MAJOR organ donor transplants here.
The differences between the 2000 model single CVVT engine with ETM and your 2003 double CVVT engine with electric throttle actuator make dropping the 03 motor into 00 car not do-able.
