Installing VADIS on 64-bit Windows 7 PC RESOLVED

Dear Forum,

One of my customers had to have his 32-bit Windows XP machine replaced with a 64-bit Windows 7 machine. He gave me a disk to install Vadis from. This was the same disk used to install Vadis on the XP machine which had been running Vadis flawlessly. The disk only had the word, “Vadis” hand-written on it.

Some instructions on the back of its case said that the normal installation instructions wouldn’t work. They said to instead browse the CD to a certain file and print it out. This file contained the correct installation instructions. I followed these to the letter, and the program seemed to install correctly. The version number is 6.7a.2775.

Now, however, when you try to access the database, you receive the following: “VADIS error: Can’t find ID with value: xxx-xxxxxx. Please contact your VADIS administrator if you need any help.” The text of the database does display; it is only the pictures that do not.

I’m wondering if this isn’t a JAVA-related issue. The only configs I can find in the Configurator which are different are the following: On the 7 machine, the SAFE location and the JREW location are blank, while on the XP machine they point to C:\Windows\JAVA and C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\Bin respectively.

Do I need to uninstall JAVA on the Windows 7 machine and reinstall Vadis, letting a version of JAVA install from the CD? I’ve never worked with Vadis before and would appreciate any and all advice.

What you are describing is typically a browser issue more than a Java issue but I've never even tried to run it on a 64 bit machine. VADIS is getting pretty long in the tooth and it doesn't want to work with a browser after ie8. VADIS has a younger brother named VIDA that loves Windows 7 - so long as it has 4 gB of RAM - but even it will crater with ie10. VIDA is sourced from the same usual suspects in the P2P world as is VADIS however the VIDA DVD's are double layer. I got around that with virtual DVD drives that I can make any size that I want. Operationally VADIS and VIDA are about the same but some of the parts diagrams are better in VIDA.

This thread gets a bit deeper in the weeds but it offers a work around solution.

Thank you so much for your information. I was able to get by there today and experimented with trying to roll back IE9 to IE8 with no joy. I also tried Chrome and Firefox. I've worked with XP Mode before and went ahead and started the first of the two downloads before I left. I've since learned of one or two more things to try to get IE8 onto the machine. If that fails, there's always XP Mode (provided the mechanics don't find it too involved). Thank you again; I'll let you know how it turns out.

I'm writing this to close out this topic. I was able to roll back IE9 on the Windows 7 PC to IE8. That done, Vadis worked fine. As far as I can tell, the only way to get IE8 onto a Windows 7 PC is by a rollback. This is only possible if the machine is old enough to have originally come with IE8. I know of no way to download IE8 onto a Windows 7 PC. So to sum it up: Vadis version 6.7a.2775 will work on a 64-bit Windows 7 PC provided IE8 is the browser. Thanks again to Lee for pointing me in the right direction.
