1999 S70 Timing belt noise RESOLVED bad New part!

Post by waynej »

Bought a used S 70 about a year ago. No record of when the timing belt had been replaced so I recently replaced belt, tensioner, idler, etc.
Now getting a low pitched whine from the engine. Started soon after the the belt change as a very faint sound that went on and off at idle and only after the car had been driven for 20+ minutes.
Now after a few thousand miles it is on all the time and is loud enough to hear while driving slow with windows down.
Seems to be coming from inside the timing belt housing. Just to make sure i checked everything on the serp belt with a stethoscope and all sounds OK.
Any ideas?

If the belt and tensioner were installed properly it could be the idler pulley which I'll bet you didn't change

I did. Replaced everything. Trying to figure which is bad so I can order it and have it here before I tear it apart, need the car daily.

You should be able to isolate it with the stethoscope trick - are you saying you cant hear the whine this way? How about power steering pump, alternator, water pump, AC compressor?

Idler pulley on the serpentine belt perhaps?

Thanks guys, finally got time to pull the cover and check with stethoscope. It was a defective idler pulley. FCP is replacing it but I have to pay shipping both ways.
