Hi all,
I will remove the engine and gearbox out of my parts car tomorrow. I have been advised to take engine and gearbox out as one unit, but I am wondering about its combined weight? I feel more secure by hoisting out the engine by itself and drop the gearbox first, or am I making more work for myself?
Thanks, Erik.

One hit one pull. Are you forgetting how hard those bolts around the bellhousing were for us to reach and how much time it took to torque them all up? Imagine that all over again.
The hump-shaped sump has been known to cause problems so just remove the radiator to get that extra space you need. The more horizontal the motor/trans assembly is the easier to drop in or remove.
I would only add an extra 80-90KG for the transmission and supposing the engine's weight is 130KG the combined is around 220KG or less.
Make sure the car can still roll. Sometimes by rolling the car forward or back you get to a position that frees things up. Remember that as the engine/trans is lifted off the mounts the car lifts up (around 80mm) so be sure you have very little slack in the chain so you can lift even higher to clear the radiator support panel. A load leveller is a very handy device between hoist and engine.
