1999 V70R Fuel gauge innoperative

Post by First Capital »

My 1999 V70R has an inoperative fuel gauge. The miles to empty computer is also inoperative. Pulling the third seat and grounding the wire from the tank does nothing. What is the next step to diagnose the issue? Can the gauge in the cluster be replaced or does the cluster need to be sent out? What companies do repairs on the 99 clusters?

One more thing, when the key is on the off position it goes down and when the car is started it goes to just under 12 gallons on the gauge.

I just got an estimate from Volvo to repair the gas gauge, $2,665.00!

They said I need a new fuel tank sending unit to the tune of $1,525.00 and I have a shorted plate in the instrument plate in the instrument cluster that would cost $1,040.00 to repair!

Jesus-tapdancing christ! Time to talk to an auto electrician. They should be able to diagnose the components rather than through the computer and a fix should be much less than that. Hopefully others will chime in with specific advice.

This may help although the 99's maybe different. Still worth reading over though. -> https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=57766

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please but my understanding is that you have two fuel senders and both are wired together to send the level info to the gauge in the cluster. If one of the senders is failing you may only get an upper or lower reading only. I've had my share of sender problems on my '99xc. I know if you have access to Vida you can test your fuel gauges operation for a full sweep.

After reading your issue again...you could have a stuck float. If the fuel sender has ever been tampered with, removed or replaced it must be orientated and locked in place or the sender float can easily get stuck in the tank and give a constant level that never changes. The gauge should, as you stated it does, drop to the bottom when the key is off.
