240/740turbo engine swap??

Post by Martin Dombroski »

Can I swap a 740 Turbo engine into my 240 without changing the engine (block)? Can I change out the ancillaries or are the engines very different internally (compression ratio).?? I want my very nice 240 to go a little faster. I recently saw a 740 T in the junkyard and the wheels started turning..

You are looking at two different fuel injection and ignition systems between those two. The 240 should be a B23FT with CIS injection and MPG ignition and the 740 should be running LH style EFI with Bosch EZK ignition. You would need the harnesses and control units as well as the complete B230FT (from manifold to manifold, from oil fill plug to oil drain plug and everything in between) and then I don't know if there is enough clearance between the back of the head and the firewall to squeeze the 700 series distributor in there, I don't think there is though. The fuel pumps should still be ok but you will have to do some creative wiring to make it all work. Lots of luck.

I doubt if it would fit. Also the engine mounts are totally different.

This post relates to 240/940 swap but 740 mounts are the same as the 940. http://img417.imageshack.us/img417/1135 ... ntske7.jpg

This may seem dumb, But I'm new to Volvos. Didnt the 240 S/Wcome in turbo version? I know I've been looking for one or a 740 Turbo S/W with a manual tranny and I havent found one. Today I settled for a 92 GL SW...thinking to make it turbo later on.

Sure the 240 came in turbo models but they all ran B21/23FT and all but the very earliest of the 7/900 series cars ran B230FT models. Aside from the engine mount difference the distributor is located in the back of the cylinder head on the B230 and if you look at your typical B23FT in a 240 you will see that there is not enough room back there for the distributor. You could probably plug the hole and stuff a distributor in the block where it goes on a 240 B20 model and then procede onto the next piece of the puzzle until it is solved but it is not going to just drop right in with any means and in my opinion the effort involved in doing it outweighs the benefits of having a B230FT in a 240.

As far as making it a Turbo later on, what are you going to do, just dump in a turbo motor, intercooler, harness, and engine control system? Sure sounds like a lot of work, why not just get what you want up front? It has got to be cheaper in the long run and whole lot easier.

Ugh! I have a 760 T, a 740T and 3 various condition 240's. I used to tell former friends that the Volvo 123 was the best car ever made, then the 240, now I think it's the (+'89) 740T. They now drive Acura's, BMW's... Get a 740+ RWD..

Or, get a 240 turbo setup (turbocharger, manifolds, exhaust) and go Megasquirt.
