2000 V70 Clunk / Clack - Changing from Drive to Reverse

For the last few weeks I have noticed a delayed clunk (sometimes a sort of Clack) when changing between drive and reverse. Now it's more noticeable.
My auto gearbox oil level seemed slightly low (quite clean though) but I had only driven a mile or so. Not had a chance to get it hot and check again.
My question is: What is "Axle Ping"? and does this sound like it?

Check the engine top mount it is a bracket going from the top of the engine back to the firewall, if this is shot (and they do fail) it will let the engine move around when going from D to R and back again. If this bush is shot also check under the car looking at the gearbox torque link as the bushes in this take a real hammering when the top mount fails.

Easy check is to get someone to move the gear selector between D and R a few times with the engine running and the bonnet (hood) open this way you can see if the engine is moving around - Mike

Thanks Mike. Just had a quick look at the top mount and it does have a small split in it. Haven't had a chance to check gearbox link (It's pouring at the moment).
When looking behind wheels on full lock there seems to be quite a lot of backlash (and a clunk) when going from drive to reverse.
I see by what you say that this mount and probably gearbox torque link need replacing but would this cause this noise?

What is a V70 "XT" ? In the US, an XC is an AWD wagon (OK - Estate...).
A bad CV or U-joint in an AWD's rear drive shaft can cause clunks.
'98 V70 R - Well Equipped for Life Up North... ;)

it may be axle ping. retorque the front axle bolts and see if it helps. don't go nuts on them, though. just see if there's a noticeable difference.

it's a two-minute job. you need a screwdriver for the center caps on the wheels, a torque wrench, and a 14mm socket for the bolt. don't need to lift the car, remove wheels, anything like that. if tightening the bolts helps, buy the axle bolts for the XC90 - they are designed differently and address the axle ping issue.

i installed one XC90 bolt and it made a big improvement (though that was an axle which had no bolt in it at all, so anything was bound to help). the other bolt turned out to be loose as well so i retorqued it, but i suppose i should buy another XC90 bolt for that axle.

After replacing the top mount on my 850, I developed a real clack from D to R. Turns out it was the motor mount right below the front pully. Came out in pieces!

Thanks to everyone who has responded.
I will replace the top mount and check other mounts.
I will also check the wheel centre bolts.
I rechecked the steering fluid after a run and the level was perfect and it was clean.
I will post results when I have done the above.

Hi BEJinFbk,
My logbook states a V70 XT Auto. I think this model is a basic V70 but with leather as standard. 2WD. No cruise control though.

I checked the gearbox torque link and there was a lot of movement. In fact the smaller front one was completely shot.
I bought replacements for top and bottom. £60 ish from Braydon Motors for the pair.
Replaced them this morning and only driven a short distance but seems quieter. I think I can hear a clunk but maybe just listening for it. I will let you know.
I have attached pictures of the lower link to show how much movement there was. The top engine mount had cracked more than I first thought.
