Just got done watching the vid at FCP on the PCV fix and never once did the guy get under the car. Went out to mine and felt around, was able to easily get to the bottom two bolts for the intake.
So to those of you who have done these (the more specific to the model year the better), what were your experiences? Were you able to get those bolts off and on again from the top of the car or was it a huge and avoidable hassle?
Reason I ask: the work I can do at home is limited to not raising the car up due to both the slope of the driveway and my rental agreement. And I don't have another place I can do work at.
98 V70 GLT do I truly need to get under the car for PCV?

I've never gone under the car to do it.
You can hit all the bolts using an extension, I always use a u-joint on a couple and an actual wrench on the lower bolt on the driver's side.

I did mine in my garage on the ground.
Seriously consider a locking extension set, I lost 3 10(?)mm sockets (and bolts) as they fell off and down trying to get the intake manifold bolts out...
A magnet extension tool also is nice...

The only thing I go underneath for is to get the support bracket bolt off of the intake manifold. It can be done from the top but I find it to be easier from the bottom with a couple of long extensions. Same thing for the dipstick tube mount.

Just finished a PCV job on a 98 V70 GLT. I raise the car because I don't like bending over, but echo what everyone else posted: no need to get under the car if you've got a few specialty tools and and don't mind working blind on a couple bolts under the manifold.

No. With a ratcheting closed-end wrench, you can pretty easily get to the bolt under the intake manifold.

When I did my 98 I should have raised the front end, just to save my back from bending over. The only time I got under the car was to look for dropped nuts!
Suggestion: remove the engine fan, easy to do with only 2 torx screws and gives you more room.
Suggestion: when putting the manifold support bracket back on, loosly attach the bottom bolt. Then after the manifold is in place attach the top support bolt and reach down and tighten the bottom bolt. I used a 1/4 ratchet for both, small enough to get in there.
Count on 4-6 hours total time.

2x on this tool. I got one that has the swivel end and worked great.jblackburn wrote:No. With a ratcheting closed-end wrench, you can pretty easily get to the bolt under the intake manifold.
