Curious if anyone out there is observing high oil consumption in their 2.5T XC90. Ours seems to burn 1-1.5 quarts per 7.5K miles, typically over a 6 month period. We are using full synthetic Mobil1. As the engine only has 75K miles on it, this just seems high to me compared to other vehicles I've owned.
Thanks!
Jason

My AWD 2.5T with 83,000miles is one of the few non-burning-oil engines I've had. Time to change the oil, the oil is nearly on the top mark on the dip stick--still looks very clean too! But my wife's 2.4T 1998 V70XC with 130,000 miles burns about a quart and a half every 5,000miles. My mechanic says this is within acceptable tolerance , and tells me not to worry about it. My guess is, he would say the same thing about your 2.5T engine.
Both engines use 5W40 full synthetic.

Sounds pretty normal for a Volvo turbo.

Finally following up. It seems with age consumption is going up. 2Q low after 7500 miles, using M1 10W-30. Thanks for the comparison point folks. Perhaps I'll locate the HM variant and try that next. Verified no smoke at the dipstick either (not the PCV).
Tip from RSPI (Robert has got a Youtube channel with helpful videos!) is to check the dipstick and the oil filler for vacuum by holding a plastic glove around it with a rubber band. Engine operation should create a slight vacuum. If the glove is filling instead of air sucking out there's your PCV issue...
I've had this problem for a while, but worse, losing 1 qt every 1000-1500 miles. I go through another 5qt jug before I get to the next oil change. I had PCV service done because the hose on the crankcase had ruptured. After PCV service, same oil consumption. I am now using Quaker State Defy HM 10W-30 and find that if you keep it about .5L short and try to make sure you cool the turbo down before switching off the ignition that will help some. My wife drives the car hard as well so I think that may be contributing to the problem. I've got 132K miles on the car and so I don't know much more I will do to try to fix this if it can be fixed. Will try to Seafoam the engine and see if that helps. Anyone do that before on a 2.5t?

I've done Seafoam on my 850's B5254T. It cleaned it up and made it run quieter. No change in consumption.
A thicker viscosity oil might help, but at this time of year, not really a winning idea.
Every Volvo I've ever heard about goes through oil, but 1qt per 1000 miles sounds extreme. It has to be going somewhere - blue smoke out the tailpipe, or spots on the ground. First suspect is the turbo drain line seal, then the RMS.

If you must use Synthetic Rotella T6 I have found to be an exceptional oil across the board in all weather conditions. Stopped using Mobil 1 or Synthetics for that matter over a dozen years ago but purchased the T6 for around $13 a Quart last year and was sold on it's performance and longevity. This will guarantee to make the typical valve train noise quieter than the M1.
O'Reilly matched Walmart's price on 12/2013 and again in 01/03/2014 but has since gone up from $19.22 to the current price of $21.36. Print Walmart's Ad then take it with you for the price match. Purchased the T6 at Advance Auto in Cary, NC for around $27 mid 2013.

Here is a great article on oils from FCP.

Start using this brand after M1 and this is my current choice in Viscosity. Quieted the 230K plus miles T5 motor after purchase and in 6 months no more white puff at start up. Oil consumption went down during that time also.

My 1998 S70 GLT with 165K miles drinks about 1 qt/1,000 miles, but I find this to be acceptable at that mileage.
However, my 2005 XC90 2.5T with only 85K miles drinks about 1 qt/1,500 miles. Local Volvo dealer told me this is normal. They tell me that even from brand-new, these turbo engines drink some oil between oil changes. Interesting!
