2008 XC90 Oil Change issue
2008 XC90 Oil Change issue
I just did an overnight drain on my new to me 2008 XC90 with a 3.2 engine. I put the new filter in, and then 7 quarts of oil and checked the dipstick and it was significantly below the cross-hatched area that indicates it is at the proper level. So I added an 8th quart (The manual says it has a 7.7 Quart capacity). It is still below the cross hatched area....I can't see putting more oil in, but the dipstick can't lie can it? Has anyone had this issue? I never had this type of problem with my S70's with the 2.5L. I did run it for a few minutes and then let it settle...not much of a difference in level...in fact it is lower after running it (normal from my experience as the filter gets filled up.

The 98 S70 Owners Manual says:
* Turbo-charged models: Add 0.95 qts. (0.9 liters) if the oil cooler has been drained"
Not familiar with the XC90 but by draining it overnight and if drained when it was hot besides taking into consideration the note above might make a difference how much came out. A dry fill capacity would be different from a regular oil change in term of capacity so maybe the overnight drain...
When I worked at Acura all services were timed by the factory for the average tech using standard methods so again maybe the overnight drain and especially if hot may have drain much more oil. If possible check how much was drained by poring it into the empty oil containers otherwise you'll have no choice but to trust the Dipstick.
