Hi All,
Red 95 Volvo na 205K miles. I am going to replace the water pump, pulleys, serpentine belt, tensioner etc, this is the 1st timing belt job. I have I am doing it.If I use the IPD locking tool, why would I need to move the crankshaft, or timing? I'm getting the parts now. I am giving my self plenty of time.TIA

I'm not sure what you are asking.
Once the marks are lined up you don't move anything until the belt and components have been replaced.
No holding tools are needed for that motor as it has no VVT ( variable valve timing).
Please remember to rotate the crank two rotations clockwise with the plugs out to feel for any valve to piston contact once the new belt is on. Then its ok to reassemble it and start it.

Theoretically speaking you can change the timing belt without lining up to the marks but it is an extremely poor and dangerous practice. I think the locking tool, which I personally find very little utility in, tends to give people a false sense of security and important steps get skipped along the way.
Changing a timing belt is not a difficult job but the instructions must be followed, step by step, or disaster lurks just around the corner. We had a poster a few weeks ago that failed to follow all of the procedures and, although I never heard a final resolution, I think he bent his valves and basically ruined his engine.
Don't be that guy.

I have an IPD locking tool. I used it once out of about 7 or 8 timing belt changes.
I really don't see any use in using it, the cams don't move that easily. The intake cam always seems to move a touch but I have no issue moving it back when it does move.

Hi All,
The car runs very well, so I was thinking I would not have to turn any thing, Oh well

when you are on the marks, you are safe to rotate the cams a bit to help get the belt on tight. you turn the motor to be sure you are still on all the marks after 2 revolutions. After that, I feel safe turning the key.

I have done several timing belts this year, the exhaust cam almost always moves on me. Yep, just move it back. I also have the IPD cam lock tool and don't use it.Matty Moo wrote:... The intake cam always seems to move a touch but I have no issue moving it back when it does move.
Actually, you have tons of leeway to move the cams when the crank is on the mark. You must ensure the crank is on the mark, but when it is the cams may be safely rotated through 360 degrees, that is why you don;t have to worry about when the cams move on you. Just put them back where they belong before you install the belt and move the crank.Pauloil wrote:when you are on the marks, you are safe to rotate the cams a bit to help get the belt on tight. you turn the motor to be sure you are still on all the marks after 2 revolutions. Based on that comment I recommend you take some time to re-read the information on timing belt changes.
The key points are:
1. align cam sprockets with marks on TB cover
2. check that crank is aligned
3. remove old belt and other components
4. install new belt and new components
5. double check all 3 timing marks
6. rotate crank twice by hand before starting the motor up
No matter how well your car runs, you will be doing a lot of rotating.
