1971 1800E distributor swap- will it work?

Post by cpdinc1800 »

I have removed the entire fuel injection system and replaced it with a Weber downdraft.

As I was making the swap, I started the car with the Weber and B20E fuel injection distributor. I removed the distributor and sold all the fuel injection parts on Ebay.

I have not been able to get the JFUR4 B20B distributor to work. Can I use a JFUR4 instead of the fuel injection JFURX4? I have spark and the timing gears are in the proper position, I can line them up with a timing light cranking the starter.

Spraying ether down the carb only results in the occasional backfire and ball of flame out the carb.

There is a compression issue with 190/190/210/135. I have had a lot of od Volvos and have always been able to start them even if they were running (poorly) on 2 or three cylinders. I cant even get this one to run at all.

So the main question remains, can I swap the distributors or do I need to try to find a JFURX4 fuel injection distributor?

O.K., I'm an idiot. The distributor drive gear was 180 degrees off. I could have sworn that when the crank timing marks and the rotor distributor mark lined up that's what I wanted. I can't even tell you how long I spent fighting this. It's very difficult to see the obvious if you are convinced you have it right.

My sympathies. On air cooled VW the distributor drive dog was actually offset so it couldn't be put in off by pi. They must have seen me coming in 1949.....
