1997 Volvo 850 - two loud bangs...

Post by xHeart »

Coming out of car wash yesterday, there were two quick loud bangs, imagined strut coil.

First knock felt below the shift, second over the rear driver's wheel. The quickness was like front and rear wheels going over a railroad, or main-hole cover, within a second.

I did not notice any change under-carriage with the flash-light. Should I raise it on the jack-stand, and then do what?

It is running with classic volvo engine sound. Oil change is due in October.
Preparing for coming winter.

Remove your rear brake disks and inspect the condition of the handbrake shoes if the friction linings have broken away from the body of the shoe they make quite a bit of a bang from time to time as they rotate around inside - Mike

Dont you drive over the wheel pulling device when you exit a car wash - once with your front and once with back?

I havent done mine in an auto wash in ages - not when for half the price 12 high school cheerleaders will wash your car while you are in it.

Depending on what type of car wash, wonder if it was the rollers or the gate they use that did not go back in track. I have had that happen and it freaked me out thinking something had broken.

 that's my only complaint about the current water restrictions here (major drought for several years now) -- No car-wash fundraisers.. Boo!

Plus one on the parking brake shoes. Just went through that - really loud bang - thought I'd broken a suspension part. Does your hand brake lever feel different? Any difference in brake grip? Both, along with the noise you experienced would be indicators of shoe delamination.

Girls are back in the school, full-time job, and a very busy Fall. My cars feel neglected.

The hand-brake lever is fully active at the 5th click, car stay put at incline while in "N".
I am starting to feel same vibration from the engine at stop-light, idling in "D", and foot on the brake pedal. This was fixed after replacing the motor mount this past spring.

Living in perpetual repair of things. The temperature has dropped to freezing levels, wrapped up home-repairs, now back to our two cars.

The vibration from the engine at stop-light, idling in D, while foot on the brake has got louder. It has a audible noise pattern like a powered jack-hammer working on braking concrete, chugs in high-speed. It is frequent, and kicks-in after few seconds of idling.

The only way to get it to stop is to put the shift in N, it clams down.
Clueless at this point?
