Put up some resistance or came to a dead stop?

How closely are you adhering to the Vida procedure I attached?
The only thing I can think of now is bad crank referencing and/or bad cam referencing or more bent valves.
When you pulled the head off were valves seated in their seats or were there gaps. A simple test is to fill the combustion chamber with gas/fuel and test for leaks.

AZ,
When you are indexing the cams, are you setting the slots horizontal such that the intake cam slot is slightly above center and the exhaust slot is slightly below center?

yes, it is exactly like the picture you sent me. it is a straight camlock so i may be off ever so slightly, but i am giving it another shot. the only valve going down in question is #3 on intake. but the piston is going down, so i don't think it is a problem.
