Engine Flush?? 2002 S60 2.4t

Post by Jbl »

My 2002 s60 2.4t now has 150,000 miles on it and I was wondering what peoples opinions on doing a engine flush with 1qt. ATF fluid, rest in oil on the next oil change. I have seen some You tube videos and people claim it will clean out your engine and not hurt it. They say to do this and drive the car for 300 miles and then change back to all oil. Any Opinions???

Personally, I would just buy a bottle of engine flush. That way it should do exactly what it says on the tin, plus comes with instructions so you know your doing it right.

I can't however comment on the ATF theory because I've never heard of it :)

Hope that helps (a bit)

I've tried the ATF "flush" in my 89 s10. Didn't see an improvement at all. Regular oil changes with quality oil is the best form of cleaning you can do. Don't get sucked in to miracle engine flushes like auto-rx or the like. If you end up doing something serious like the diesel fuel, I would recommend dropping the pan and cleaning both the pan and the pickup as well as changing out the o-rings while you're in there.

From my reading, ATF doesn't have the levels of detergents as compared to a quality synthetic oil. That said, I have used MMO, Marvel Mystry Oil for 25+ years, both in the crankcase and fuel tank. We have recently purchased a 2004 XC70 for my son. 92,000 miles. Oil changes were more or less regular at 7500 miles using convential oil. The previous owner had about 3000 miles on the last oil change and the oil was black. While oil color is not an indication of condition, I couldn't let it go. I immediatly changed to synthetic, Pennzoil Platinum. I did add some MMO, ~ 2 ounces to the crankcase. I'll be watching closely for a quick oil darkening. I only use synthetic in all the cars/tractor. When I had the 20+ year old tractor engine apart (head gasket) I also replaced the crankcase seals. The engine crankcase was spotless.
