1984 240 turbo no power to main fuel pump for start

Post by jetdog »

Can anyone shed some light as to how the power is not getting to the main fuel pump on start up.
I did drive this car into my garage 6 months ago with no issues... however... changed the dashboard and also removed enough wire and components around the heater fan housing to remove the squirrel cages on both sides, removing coins and debris. While disassembling I labelled and took photos and re installed everything as accurately as possible. It has a new fuel pump relay, also took note that plastic plug for the relay is melted a bit at terminal 30 (or possibly 87) can't remember as not at home this week.
I did try a jumper on #5 to # 7 fuse to get the pumps running, but only get the aux pump to run. (same result by jumping fuel pump relay plug #30 &87)
Main pump is functional, ran a wire from the battery to to the yellow wire under the rear seat going to this fuel pump, and it runs. With this method of getting the main pump running the car will fire up but not run more than 2 sec, suspect cold start relay is not getting power either. Using this method, the engine would fire up then quit, but progressively longer each attempt until 5-6 tries, then it would run fairly smooth until the power to the main pump was pulled, then it died.
Have cleaned and reattached all the ground points I can find under hood and inside the car, but must be missing one somewhere possibly,... maybe it's entirely something else. Help!!
Any ideas are welcome.
Thank you for reading.
